The series of 9 sculptures were created over the last year: a year of tremendous upheaval, isolation, solitude, grief, reckoning and, to those who were fortunate enough to get there, grace.

In March, as the shutdown was announced, I decided to use this peculiar luxury of time to work on techniques I hadn’t done before. My metier, and what I have been known for, is my sculptural beadwork. Painting seemed daunting, but here I was with time on my hands and no excuse.

Each piece made was an individual sculpture noting where my emotional landscape was at the particular time. I never looked at the work as a series, but once the last piece was close to finished, I understood that the pieces formed a narrative that not only pointed to my personal place, but to where many were over the course of the year.

Here is my story of the Time Markers.

In her snood, she carries clear resin snakes…reference to Damballah, a cool, water, life-filled spirit in the Vodou pantheon. She is pensive, quiet, serene. She is naive.

My mantra during the first 4 months of lockdown was, “Two weeks. Two weeks.” As information shifted it was unclear what would happen when. The mantra gave me a sense of order as well a feeling of hope that this terror would have an end and that there would be a plan to contain and eradicate the mysterious plague.

Both shell shocked and innocent, she has leaned into nature, making and storing plant medicine to stave off the unknown. She is doing the best she can to keep both calm and aware.

At this time of internal and external struggle who do we give our energy to and why? Clear boundaries create the push/pull with those who want more than you have to offer. They are also necessary to protect you and those around you who you chose to care for with heart, body and mind.

Decisions about who you need to focus on takes center stage. How do we take care of ourselves? At this time of internal and external struggle who do we give our energy to and why? Clear boundaries create the push/pull with those who want more than you have to offer. They are also necessary to protect you and those around you who you chose to care for with heart, body and mind.

In the depths of day-to-day assaults on our communal national and global psyche, I reached a point of overload. Flashes of anger brought on by mismanagement, lies and disgust for how our leaders would trade power for humanity made many frazzled and fed up, contemplating the idea that everything may need to just go up in flames.

Re calibrating: allowing more in than necessary. Needing to Adjust boundaries.

Balance: the precarious, momentary moments of coming to terms.

Power Play: hierarchy of power balance: who’s in charge? Is this hierarchy necessary?

Standing Your Ground: securing and cleaning the nest. Declaring unwaveringly what you stand for, what you'll put up with.

Coming into new light; humbled, transformed and reconfigured.
